About Olukunle Salako
Olukunle Salako joined Amazon in December 2023 as a seasonal employee. He started in entry-level warehouse roles: packing, picking, and stowing, before moving into problem-solving. Like many front-line workers, he was looking for more than a steady paycheck. He wanted growth, a challenge, and a career that matched his ambition.
"I'm always very passionate about growing. I never want to be stuck doing one thing and not seeing or having room to improve myself."
When Olukunle became eligible for Amazon's Career Choice program in April 2024, he started looking for a way to act on that ambition.
The Starting Point: Ambition Without a Technical Background
Olukunle had no experience in maintenance, repairs, or technology. None. When he found the mechatronics program while browsing Career Choice options, he almost talked himself out of it.
Instead, he asked himself a simple question.
"I decided, you know, what's the worst that can happen?"
That shift in thinking, from doubt to curiosity, set everything else in motion.
Finding Unmudl: Choosing the Right Program
Olukunle searched for a program that aligned with where he could realistically go within Amazon. The Robotics and Mechatronics Technician role at Level 3 was the target. Unmudl's mechatronics course was the path to it.
He enrolled in November 2024.
The connection between the course and the job was not abstract. Without completing the Unmudl program, candidates simply do not qualify for the technician role.
"If you don't go through the Unmudl course, you're most likely not going to qualify for the job."

The Learning Experience: What the Course Actually Taught Him
The 10-week program covered electrical systems, motor controls, pneumatics, hydraulic systems, circuits, and core mechanical and electrical fundamentals. But for Olukunle, the content was only part of what made the experience work.
The instructor, Mr. Leslie, made a significant impression.
"The instructor really made me gain confidence because he was so knowledgeable about everything. Mr. Leslie finds simple ways to break things down."
The part that truly hooked Olukunle was the hands-on practical component. Watching videos was useful. Going out and actually diagnosing systems, connecting components, and working through real problems was what made everything stick.
"You are learning about these things sitting in front of a screen, then you go fix things. It teaches you how to connect systems, how to diagnose systems. The entire program was so well put together."
Making It Work Around a Night Shift Schedule
Olukunle was working night shifts when he started the program. The first class was on a Friday morning at 8 a.m. He finished his Thursday night shift at 5 a.m., went home, showered, and drove an hour and thirty minutes to make it on time.
That pace was not sustainable. So he worked within Amazon's scheduling systems to swap his Thursday shifts to Tuesdays. That gave him three consecutive days, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, to focus entirely on the course.
"On Fridays since it's hands-on, I assimilate better. So I never forget it. Those were the three days I just set aside."
He did not take a single absence accommodation. He managed it entirely through shift swaps, and he made it work.
The Results: From Training to Job Offer in Two Months
Olukunle completed the Unmudl mechatronics program in December 2024. In February 2025, he received his job offer.
The numbers are hard to argue with:
70% pay increase from his warehouse wage to his technician salary
L1 to L3 promotion, a jump that is not common within Amazon's structure
Full-time role as Robotics and Mechatronics Technician at Amazon SDX8
Hands-on work with H-drive robots and conveyor systems from day one
The Unmudl course also gave him a direct advantage in the interview. His practical knowledge of course material meant he walked into the conversation already knowing what the job required. He was able to connect technical concepts to Amazon's leadership principles and demonstrate readiness in a way that clearly mattered.
"Having good practical knowledge about what you're supposed to do and the expectations Amazon has for you really gave me an upper hand."
His advice on this point is specific: do not just go through the course. Know it.
"Don't just go through the course. Be knowledgeable about the concepts within it, because all you do in the course is what you're going to be doing when you become a mechatronics and robotics tech within Amazon."
Life in the New Role: Ownership from Day One
The first 30 days in the technician role are dedicated to safety training and learning the building's processes from the ground up. After that, the real work begins.
At SDX8, Olukunle works with H-drive robots that move pods around the warehouse floor, maintains conveyors, and partners with Amazon contractors on broader technical operations. Amazon provides every tool needed to do the job. The learning curve is steep but intentional.
What surprised him most about the role was the autonomy it demands.
"You come in and no one tells you what to do. Leadership principle: ownership. You have to take ownership of a system. If you pick it, then you have to do it, because when anything happens to that process, everyone knows it's you."
Senior technicians one level above him can take charge of an entire building during overnight shifts. That level of responsibility, and the speed at which it comes, is part of what the role offers to anyone willing to step into it.
Advice for Anyone Considering This Path
Olukunle's advice to anyone thinking about enrolling in an Unmudl course is direct.
"Just do it. Let go of every fear that you think you have. I never had a background in maintenance. I never had a background in robotics. I just did it because I felt I could learn. If you're willing to learn, if you put your mind to it, you can do it."
And on the question of motivation, he pushes back gently on the idea that pay is the only reason to pursue this.
"I know I've spoken about the pay, but for me, it's all about career improvement. Do you want to improve on yourself? Do you want to have a better life? I'm sure everyone wants a better life. So just take that step. Look into your Career Choice program. It's on your A-to-Z app. Apply and just do it."
