What Does an Industrial Electrician Do? 

Industrial electricians are responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems and equipment at power plants, manufacturing facilities, factories, mines, and other industrial settings.

What Does a Residential Electrician Do?

Wiring Material 

This is a key area of difference.  

The most common wiring method used by industrial electricians is called flexible metal conduit (FMC). 

FMC is favored in industrial settings despite the comparatively higher cost because of its durability,  flexibility, and resistance to abrasion

It comes in flexible metal tubing (usually made of steel) that can be worked into tight bends and complex spaces. FMC protects electrical wires in high-voltage, high-temperature, and high-vibration environments

Residential electricians, on the other hand, mostly work with less expensive non-metallic sheathed cables (NM cables). 

NM cable is a standard household wiring solution made of two or more insulated wires and a bare ground wire housed in a plastic jacket.

Industrial electricians typically work with high electrical loads, typically in the 400-volt to 600-volt range, but even higher in some cases. 

In contrast, residential electricians work with 120-volt circuits.
