About Michael Valadez

Michael Valadez came to Amazon with an IT background and a straightforward goal: find something more stable. He started as a part-time Flex employee at the RBD5 facility in Irving, Texas, and began looking into what the company actually offered its people over the long term.

One benefit stood out. Amazon's Career Choice program covers the cost of education in high-demand technical fields. Once Michael discovered it, his next move became clear.

The Starting Point: A Shifting Schedule and a Skills Gap

Two things stood between Michael and a full-time technical role at Amazon.

The first was his schedule. As a Flex associate, his hours shifted constantly. A traditional in-person program would have required a consistency he simply did not have.

The second was experience. His background was in IT, not industrial maintenance. Mechatronics, robotics, conveyance systems, preventative maintenance -- none of it was territory he had worked in before. To break into an RME role, he would need to build that technical foundation from scratch.

Why Unmudl: The Right Fit for a Flex Schedule

In early 2024, Michael started researching his Career Choice options and landed on the mechatronics program through Unmudl. Two things made the decision straightforward.

First, the format. Online learning meant he could study around his schedule, not the other way around. There was no fixed classroom time to lock in, no commute to factor in, no risk of a last-minute shift change derailing his progress.

Second, the support. His first conversation with Lori from Unmudl's learner services team made clear this was not a self-service platform where learners were left to figure things out alone.

"She was extremely helpful in just answering questions and moving me along in the process," Michael says. "She really encouraged me to just move forward."

That combination of flexibility and personal support was enough to get him started.

The Learning Journey: Three Courses, One Clear Direction

Michael completed three courses through Unmudl, each building on the last.

Introduction to Mechatronics gave him the vocabulary and conceptual foundation to understand the field he was moving into.

Mechatronics for Equipment Maintenance deepened that foundation. He completed the first section online, then made a choice that changed the experience: when an in-person lab option opened up at Texas State Technical College, he took it.

"I decided to go hands-on," Michael says. "That was a great experience just getting a feel for everything."

Principles for Controls came after he had already landed his role. He completed it within the past three months and is using it as the foundation for a controls systems career path.

His approach to studying was practical and self-directed. He worked with whatever time he had available -- sometimes an hour, sometimes half a day. He found a quiet space, cut out distractions, and kept his eye on where he was going.

"Just really stay focused on knowing what the end goal was," he says. "That's really the driving factor whenever we push ourselves to anything."

The Support That Made the Difference: STAR Prep and a Trusted Advocate

One of the most concrete benefits Michael got from Unmudl was not in the coursework itself. It was what came at the end.

Amazon evaluates candidates using the STAR format -- Situation, Task, Action, Result. Knowing how to structure an answer that way is not intuitive, and getting it wrong in an interview means strong experience does not land the way it should. Unmudl built STAR interview preparation directly into the program.

"Unmudl did a great job of preparing me for that with the STAR process," Michael says. "Knowing how to break down my stories and make them captivating to whoever the interviewer was going to be."

When Michael hit a rough stretch -- applying for roles for a couple of months without getting traction -- Lori stepped back in. She offered to review his resume, helped him think through how to present himself, and kept him from losing momentum.

"She just encouraged me to continue pushing forward," Michael says. "She offered, can we look over the resume? What help can we provide?"

That kind of ongoing support is what separates a course from a career program.

The Results: A New Role, a New City, a New Direction

Michael is now a Mechatronics and Robotics Technician with Amazon's Reliability Maintenance and Engineering team at the MSN5 facility in Madison, Wisconsin. He relocated from Irving, Texas to take the role with roughly three weeks' notice -- a move that would have been easy to walk away from, but that Amazon worked with him to make possible.

His days are varied and technically demanding. He starts with emails and shift handover notes to get up to speed on what happened across the facility while he was gone. From there, he heads into preventative maintenance walks -- covering conveyance systems, chain-driven areas, print-and-apply stations, and more -- using thermal readers, strobe lights, ultrasound tools, and his own senses to catch anything that might become a failure down the road.

During planned downtime windows, he digs into larger repairs and open work orders, locking out equipment, getting in, fixing what needs to be fixed, and closing out clean.

"No two days are alike," Michael says. "Every day you come in, you're going to have different problems that may arise. It's almost like running on an adrenaline rush all day."

He has compared Unmudl's program directly with the in-person RMA apprenticeship program that many of his colleagues completed. The overlap is significant.

"It's very comparable to the RMA program," Michael says. "Many of the colleagues that I work with went through the apprenticeship program and we were comparing things -- it's very, very similar."

What He Would Tell Others: Show Up Disciplined

For working adults weighing whether an online upskilling program can actually lead somewhere real, Michael's answer is direct.

"Unmudl is a great program," he says. "The main difference is one is going to be in person and one is going to be online. Are you that type of person that's going to be able to commit yourself and be disciplined in that online focus?"

His advice is practical: set yourself up before you start. Find a dedicated space. Minimize distractions. Know the position you are aiming for and keep coming back to it when the work gets hard.

"Remind yourself what the goal is for the program, where you want to see yourself, what position you want to see yourself," Michael says. "Take that time in the beginning to set yourself up for success."

Ready to Make Your Move?

Michael started as a part-time Flex employee with an IT background and no experience in industrial maintenance. He now works full-time as a Mechatronics and Robotics Technician at one of Amazon's largest fulfillment facilities and is already building toward a controls systems career.

Unmudl's mechatronics and robotics training is available through Amazon Career Choice and directly to working adults who are ready to take the same kind of step.
