From Nigeria to the Warehouse Floor

Kunle's journey didn't start in a robotics lab or an engineering classroom. It started on the warehouse floor of an Amazon fulfillment center in December 2023.

"I started with Amazon as a seasonal associate," Kunle recalls. "My background is mostly in business operations."

With a bachelor's degree in metrology from Nigeria and a business administration education from the U.S., Kunle wasn't exactly your typical candidate for a technical role. But he had something more valuable than a perfect resume: an insatiable curiosity and a hands-on approach to learning.

"It's all about learning for me," he says simply.

Growing up in Nigeria, Kunle was the kid who took things apart just to see how they worked. Remote controls, irons, household appliances… if it was broken, Kunle would tinker with it until it worked again.

"My wife recently just had her smoothie maker go bad, and I just fixed it. Never had a background," he laughs.

Fixing smoothie makers in your kitchen is one thing, but building a career in robotics and mechatronics? That's a big leap.

Discovering Unmudl and Taking a Chance

Like most Amazon associates, Kunle's first introduction to Unmudl came through the "Amazon A to Z" app, which serves as their employee portal.

In the app, Amazon's Career Choice program provides opportunities to upskill and grow within the company. For someone as naturally curious as Kunle, it was an invitation he couldn't ignore.

"I'm very curious. I'm always looking for opportunities to grow," he says. "And when I joined Amazon and eventually qualified to use my Career Choice, I decided to look for the program that's mostly aligned with how I envision myself within Amazon."

He scrolled through the options, and mechatronics caught his eye.

There was just one problem.

"I never had a background in maintenance or repairs or technology that much," Kunle admits.

But then again, he'd spent his whole life fixing things without a manual. If he could figure those out through trial and error, why not give this a shot?

"I decided, you know what's the worst that can happen?" he remembers. "And I went through the Career Choice, looked for the program, found Unmudl, and decided to just give it a try."

The simple decision to take a chance, despite having no formal technical background, would change everything.

The Learning Experience where Theory meets Practice

When Kunle enrolled in Unmudl's Mechatronics program in November 2024, he wasn't sure what to expect. The curriculum covered electrical systems, motor controls, pneumatics, hydraulic systems, circuits, and basic mechanical analytical systems.

It sounded intimidating on paper.

Kunle was hesitant, but he reminded himself that his childhood curiosity had given him an informal education.

"In high school, I took physics as one of the core curricula, where I grew up, which is in Nigeria. I was kind of aware of these systems. I played with these systems as a child," he explains. "It was very important to see that there are more structured ways to do these things."

The program was designed to be completed in 10 weeks, including hands-on classes running from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday.

"I used to work nights, so on Thursday nights, I got off at 5 o'clock, went home, showered, and drove an hour and a half to start the course by 8 o'clock," Kunle recalls.

This schedule wasn't sustainable, so he swapped his Thursday shifts to Tuesdays. That gave him Thursday to prepare, Friday for the hands-on training, and Saturday for coursework.

"Thursday, Friday, Saturday... those three days I just set aside," he says. "And I'm done."

There was no need to quit his job or sacrifice his income. The program's structure, which combined flexible online learning with just one day per week of intensive hands-on training, made it actually doable for someone working full-time.

Kunle gives major credit to the course instructor.

"He was so knowledgeable about everything... he finds simple ways to break things down," Kunle says. He enjoyed Unmudl's blend of theory and practice, and had fun with the practical, hands-on work.

"You are learning about these things sitting in front of a screen, then you go fix things. It teaches you how to connect systems, teaches you how to diagnose systems. The entire program was so well put together," Kunle explains.

The course was exactly what someone like Kunle needed. Effective, concise, and flexible.

Just ten weeks after starting, he completed the program. He now had all the knowledge and certification needed for his next career move.

Landing the Job

Completing the Unmudl program was just the beginning. A couple of months later, in February, Kunle interviewed for a Robotics and Mechatronics Technician position.

He explains, "If you don't go through the Unmudl course, they're most likely not going to qualify you for the job. So that's the first thing."

Getting the interview was only half the battle. Kunle still had to prove his knowledge and skills, to do the job safely and effectively. Unmudl's employer-aligned curriculum helped.

"Having practical knowledge about what you're supposed to do or the expectation Amazon has for you really gave me an upper hand," he says.

During the interview, the questions weren't just theoretical. They were practical, safety-focused, and designed to weed out anyone who was just winging it.

"How are you going to do this? With your knowledge of this, what are you going to do?" he recalls being asked, "These systems, electronic systems, the motor systems, they're very… deadly. So my knowledge of what I learned during the process... knowing how to connect certain things, knowing what you shouldn't do... it translated into the interview. I was able to show the knowledge that I have."

Later that month, Kunle got the offer. He'd made the jump from an L1 position – packing, picking, and problem-solving – to an L3 Robotics and Mechatronics Technician role.

"It's a huge jump. Not everyone within Amazon typically experiences jumps or promotions like this," he says.

Just 2 months after the course, Kunle had transformed his career and earned a 70% pay increase. He could proudly say he was a skilled robotics and mechatronics technician.

Kunle's New Life as a Robotics and Mechatronics Technician

Kunle's initial days in his new role involved safety trainings, maintenance protocols, and understanding systems.

"Your first 30 days within this new role are all about safety. It's all about transferring knowledge to you," Kunle explains. "So it's learn, learn, learn and keep learning."

He now works with H Drives, which are the small, precise robots that zip around the fulfillment center floor. Kunle also maintains conveyors and works with other Amazon contractors on different technical systems within the facility.

In his new role, he's focusing on preventing problems before they happen, rather than only fixing what's broken.

"I'd rather not fix things. So I'm very proactive in my approaches. I tend to look for things that will likely have faults in the near future and try to rectify them before they actually happen," he explains. "Because it takes more time to actually fix these things if it breaks down than to just spend a little time ensuring the maintenance, monitoring things."

One of Kunle's favorite things about the role is the autonomy.

"You come in, and no one tells you what to do," Kunle says. "You have to take ownership of systems. So you come in and say, you know what? This is what I want to do this week. I want this process to be mine. Whatever happens within this process, it's on me."

It's a level of responsibility he couldn't have when he was packing boxes on the warehouse floor. Now, he's ensuring that every system within the building works properly.

The role is challenging. Kunle doesn't shy away from that reality.

"I would say it's challenging. I've moved from just packing, picking, or problem-solving. And currently I'm working with robots," he admits.

But for someone who thrives on learning and is always looking to advance, challenge is exactly the point.

Having a Growth Mindset

Ask Kunle about his career philosophy, and you'll hear something that sets him apart.

"I always want to see growth in everything I do," he says.

It's not about chasing money, though the pay increase does help his young family. For him, growth is about something deeper.

"If money is your motivation, then yes, you should do it. But ideally, for me, it's all about career growth. I feel I never want to be stuck doing one thing and not seeing or having room to improve myself," Kunle explains.

This mindset didn't start with his new role. It's what drove him to take the Unmudl course in the first place.

"If you're comfortable, then you probably never grow. You have an opportunity for self-growth, and if you do not take it, then it means you just stay stuck wherever you are," he says.

Taking his own advice, Kunle has already mapped out his next move.

He plans to take another course on Unmudl, confident in the platform that has helped him become a technician. Currently, he's considering taking the Principles of Control Systems course, which would position him to become a Control Systems Lead at Amazon.

"I have my timeline all set out for me... and all this can be achievable within the space of 6 to 12 months," Kunle says.

He's also thinking about where he could go after working with Controls Systems. The career path within mechatronics at Amazon is vast, and with fewer people in the field, you can advance quickly.

"I've seen people who started as apprentices, as mechatronics apprentices, and within the space of two, three years, they're already area managers and some of them are even operations managers within the team," he notes.

Kunle's Advice for Anyone Considering the Leap

Kunle has already recommended the Unmudl program to five people. When he talks about it, there's a genuine excitement in his voice. It comes from someone who's lived the transformation firsthand.

"Just do it. Just let go of every fear that you think you have. It's not so difficult. Everyone can do it," he says with conviction.

Kunle knows what holds people back. The fear that they don't have the right background or can't do something technical. He's lived through those same fears.

"I never had a background in maintenance. I never had a background in robotics. I just did it because I felt I could learn. If you're willing to learn, and if you put your mind to it, then you can do it."

His advice for anyone on the fence about taking an Unmudl course boils down to a simple question:

"Do you want to have a better life? I'm sure everyone wants a better life. So just take that step. Apply and just do it. I promise you it's going to change your life," he says.

That promise isn't empty. Kunle is living proof. He's gone from a seasonal associate packing boxes to a skilled technician working with advanced robotics, excited about the clear career path ahead.
