Kunle's New Life as a Robotics and Mechatronics Technician
Kunle's initial days in his new role involved safety trainings, maintenance protocols, and understanding systems.
"Your first 30 days within this new role are all about safety. It's all about transferring knowledge to you," Kunle explains. "So it's learn, learn, learn and keep learning."
He now works with H Drives, which are the small, precise robots that zip around the fulfillment center floor. Kunle also maintains conveyors and works with other Amazon contractors on different technical systems within the facility.
In his new role, he's focusing on preventing problems before they happen, rather than only fixing what's broken.
"I'd rather not fix things. So I'm very proactive in my approaches. I tend to look for things that will likely have faults in the near future and try to rectify them before they actually happen," he explains. "Because it takes more time to actually fix these things if it breaks down than to just spend a little time ensuring the maintenance, monitoring things."
One of Kunle's favorite things about the role is the autonomy.
"You come in, and no one tells you what to do," Kunle says. "You have to take ownership of systems. So you come in and say, you know what? This is what I want to do this week. I want this process to be mine. Whatever happens within this process, it's on me."
It's a level of responsibility he couldn't have when he was packing boxes on the warehouse floor. Now, he's ensuring that every system within the building works properly.
The role is challenging. Kunle doesn't shy away from that reality.
"I would say it's challenging. I've moved from just packing, picking, or problem-solving. And currently I'm working with robots," he admits.
But for someone who thrives on learning and is always looking to advance, challenge is exactly the point.
Having a Growth Mindset
Ask Kunle about his career philosophy, and you'll hear something that sets him apart.
"I always want to see growth in everything I do," he says.
It's not about chasing money, though the pay increase does help his young family. For him, growth is about something deeper.
"If money is your motivation, then yes, you should do it. But ideally, for me, it's all about career growth. I feel I never want to be stuck doing one thing and not seeing or having room to improve myself," Kunle explains.
This mindset didn't start with his new role. It's what drove him to take the Unmudl course in the first place.
"If you're comfortable, then you probably never grow. You have an opportunity for self-growth, and if you do not take it, then it means you just stay stuck wherever you are," he says.
Taking his own advice, Kunle has already mapped out his next move.
He plans to take another course on Unmudl, confident in the platform that has helped him become a technician. Currently, he's considering taking the Principles of Control Systems course, which would position him to become a Control Systems Lead at Amazon.
"I have my timeline all set out for me... and all this can be achievable within the space of 6 to 12 months," Kunle says.
He's also thinking about where he could go after working with Controls Systems. The career path within mechatronics at Amazon is vast, and with fewer people in the field, you can advance quickly.
"I've seen people who started as apprentices, as mechatronics apprentices, and within the space of two, three years, they're already area managers and some of them are even operations managers within the team," he notes.
Kunle's Advice for Anyone Considering the Leap
Kunle has already recommended the Unmudl program to five people. When he talks about it, there's a genuine excitement in his voice. It comes from someone who's lived the transformation firsthand.
"Just do it. Just let go of every fear that you think you have. It's not so difficult. Everyone can do it," he says with conviction.
Kunle knows what holds people back. The fear that they don't have the right background or can't do something technical. He's lived through those same fears.
"I never had a background in maintenance. I never had a background in robotics. I just did it because I felt I could learn. If you're willing to learn, and if you put your mind to it, then you can do it."
His advice for anyone on the fence about taking an Unmudl course boils down to a simple question:
"Do you want to have a better life? I'm sure everyone wants a better life. So just take that step. Apply and just do it. I promise you it's going to change your life," he says.
That promise isn't empty. Kunle is living proof. He's gone from a seasonal associate packing boxes to a skilled technician working with advanced robotics, excited about the clear career path ahead.
