Description

Description:

We're looking for a Hardware Development Engineer to design and build power electronics and charging systems for our robotic platform. You'll own the electrical design of our autonomous charging dock, including power conversion, thermal management, and board-level integration. You will also contribute to broader platform electronics across the robot as the program scales.

This is a hands-on role. You'll spend real time in the lab with oscilloscopes and thermal cameras, iterating on power converter designs, debugging switching waveforms, and validating efficiency targets. You'll work upstream with mechanical engineers on thermal integration and downstream with firmware engineers on control loop implementation and communication interfaces.

The right person for this role is a strong power electronics engineer who is comfortable owning a subsystem end-to-end: defining requirements from system-level constraints, selecting topologies, designing schematics and layouts, managing vendor relationships for custom components, and seeing hardware through bring-up and validation.

Key job responsibilities
- Design and validate power converter circuits including DC/DC stages, isolated topologies, protection circuitry, and fault-isolation schemes
- Own PCB schematic capture and layout for power circuits, with attention to high-current routing, thermal management, and EMC
- Bring up and debug prototype boards independently in the lab using oscilloscopes, power analyzers, thermal imaging, and electronic loads
- Perform thermal analysis to estimate power losses, size heatsinks, and validate thermal performance against system constraints
- Collaborate with firmware engineers on gate drive timing, ADC sensing configuration, and real-time control interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN)
- Work with mechanical engineers on physical integration of thermal solutions, magnetics, and connector interfaces
- Develop and execute electrical test plans including board bring-up, functional verification, efficiency characterization, and automated test scripting
- Manage vendor relationships for custom components and contract manufacturing: specifying requirements, reviewing proposals, iterating on designs, and qualifying deliverables
- Support EMC pre-compliance testing and design filtering/shielding solutions to meet emissions and immunity targets
- Contribute to broader platform electronics projects as program needs evolve, including power distribution, sensor integration, or board-level debug support
- Maintain design documentation including schematics, BOMs, design rationale, and test reports
- Participate in design reviews and define electrical engineering best practices for the team

About the team
Fauna Robotics, an Amazon company, is building capable, safe, and genuinely delightful robots for everyday life. Our goal is simple: make robots people actually want to live and interact with in everyday human spaces.
We believe that future won't arrive until building for robotics becomes far more accessible. Today, too much effort is spent reinventing the fundamentals. We're changing that by developing tightly integrated hardware and software systems that make it faster, safer, and more intuitive to create real-world robotic products.
Our work spans the full stack: mechanical design, control systems, dynamic modeling, and intelligent software. The focus is not just functionality, but experience. We're building robots that feel responsive, expressive, and genuinely useful.
At Fauna, you'll work at the frontier of this space, helping define how robots move, manipulate, and interact with people in natural environments. It's an opportunity to solve hard problems across hardware and software with a team focused on making robotics accessible and joyful to build.
If you care about making robotics real for everyone and building systems that are as delightful as they are capable, we're interested in hearing from you.

Basic Qualifications:

- Experience working cross functionally with tech teams
- 3+ years of electrical engineering experience with a focus on power electronics design
- Experience designing DC/DC converters, full-bridge inverters, or isolated power topologies
- Strong PCB design and layout skills (Altium, KiCad, or similar) with demonstrated experience on high-current power circuits, thermal management, and EMC-aware routing
- Hands-on lab skills: ability to independently bring up, debug, and validate power boards using oscilloscopes, power analyzers, and thermal imaging
- Experience with embedded system interfaces (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN) and basic firmware configuration for gate drive timing and ADC sensing

Preferred Qualifications:

- Experience with wireless power transfer, inductive charging, or resonant magnetics design (Qi-class or higher power levels)
- Experience with high-voltage design and AC mains-connected circuits, including creepage/clearance requirements and isolation techniques
- Experience with resonant converter topologies (LLC, series-series, or similar)
- Experience with AC/DC front-end design including PFC stages, isolated converters, and safety/compliance for mains-connected equipment
- Experience with magnetics design: coil winding specification, ferrite core selection, Litz wire, and custom transformer/inductor procurement
- Thermal analysis skills: power loss estimation, heatsink sizing, and interpreting thermal imaging for design iteration
- Experience managing vendor relationships for custom components or contract manufacturing (specifying requirements, reviewing proposals, qualifying deliverables)
- Experience with EMC pre-compliance testing and filter/shielding design
- Experience with multi-channel power systems (current sharing, ORing, fault isolation)
- Familiarity with safety standards relevant to power electronics (IEC 62368, IEC 61980 for wireless power transfer)
- Experience with test automation scripting (Python, MATLAB, or similar) for power characterization
- Background in robotics, consumer electronics, automotive, or other electromechanical product development
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field
