Course Description

Biomedical Equipment Maintenance is an 80-hour online, self-paced course. In this course, learners explore the foundations of biomedical equipment maintenance and prepare themselves for further education towards a career as a biomedical technician or for working in a hospital, clinic, or other healthcare facility.

The course focuses on foundational areas needed for biomedical equipment maintenance: fundamental skills, human anatomy and physiology, electrical systems, electronics, mechanical systems, fluid systems, network systems, and communication. After completing this course, learners will have the core knowledge and skills needed for a career or further education in maintaining biomedical equipment.

The course is aligned with SACA certification, and learners who successfully complete the course will have completed the coursework for several SACA micro-credentials. The course does not provide SACA certification; learners who wish to become certified will need to complete one or more SACA exams.

Biomedical Equipment Maintenance uses content from videos, documents, e-books, and Amatrol, the leader in online technical learning. Learners can work at their own pace, and a learner who spends 8 hours a week will complete the course in approximately 10 weeks. Learners are assessed by a final quiz on each individual module. Learners need to achieve 80% or higher on each final quiz to successfully complete the course and will have three attempts to pass each quiz.

After This Course, You Will Be Able To
Define biomedical equipment maintenance and describe the role of technology in the field. Explain essential safety procedures for the equipment maintenance work environment. Describe systems in human anatomy and physiology, including cells, DNA, anatomical planes and positions, joints, and the brain. Describe and explain the function of electrical circuits, including schematics, electrical measurements, and transformers. Describe and explain the function and operation of electronic sensors. Describe and explain mechanical power system components, including v-belts, chain drives, and spur drives. Describe and explain pneumatic fluid systems. Describe the function of networking systems, including PLC and Ethernet systems. Describe strategies for effective workplace communication, including effective workplace writing and working in groups.
