Course Details

This two-course certificate program teaches students with the basic automotive technology knowledge and skills required for employment as a service advisor for both small and large independent garages and dealerships. In the first course, students will learn the different automotive parts, components, major assemblies, vehicle systems and how they function and the required maintenance. Topics also include safety, work ethics, service facilities and federal, state and local laws as they apply to the automotive industry.

The second course provides the student with the skills required for employment as a service advisor. Students will learn about customer service, writing an initial repair order estimating parts and labor costs and how to revise repair estimates in accordance with California State law. Topics also include communications, customer relations, manufacture warranty policies and procedures, returning the vehicle to the customer and follow-up.

After This Course, You Will Be Able To

Upon successful completion of the first course, you will be able to:
1. Identify the automotive parts, components, major assemblies, and the vehicle system it belongs to. 
2. Explain the function and service requirements of a part, component, and major assembly of a vehicle within its automotive system. 
3. Analyze and explain the different options and when to use them in the replacement of repair parts. 
4. Describe the safety practices, ethical behavior and professionalism that should be used in the work environment of an automotive repair facility. 
5. Explain the rules and regulations for federal, state, and local agency guidelines that are set to protect the environment, individual, and the work site.

Upon successful completion of the second course, you will be able to:
1. Explain the different types of service facilities and describe safety procedures used in the workplace. 
2. Describe the role of the service advisor, ethics, the different team approaches and the different types of communication used with customers. 
3. Describe customer relations as they relate to sales, follow-up and customer conflict resolution. 
4. Explain vehicle and customer records and the different types of warranties. 
5. Demonstrate how to write a service order and how to revise a service order.
